Welcome to the Tom Burnside Motorsport Archive.
Shown here for your pleasure is a wide variety of photographs that showcase magnificent cars and legendary drivers, fabled venues and memorable events from the golden age of sports car racing in the Americas. Photographed by Tom Burnside, one of the few photo-journalists specializing in sports during the 1950s and 1960s, this sampling of his work captures an insider's view of a fleeting moment in motorsport history. The view will change from time to time as some images are added and others replaced. Although Burnside is best known for his skill in capturing the essence of speed and depicting a driver's emotions, he is also a master at evoking the period's distinctive energy and excitement in definitive details: an unusual camaraderie among participants; "primitive" driving apparel allowing glimpses of powerful facial concentration and tensed arm muscles; the self-destruction of Maserati and through-the-streets racing in Havana and Caracas, to name just a few. In the gallery of his Prints, in his Book: American Racing: Road Racing in the 50s and 60s, in his Screen Savers and his Poster you will see for yourself Tom Burnside's true artistry in capturing the essence of an era in impeccable still photographs. |
